The Pontiac GTO turned 50 this year along with the Mustang and Barracuda. Everyone knows 1964 was a vintage year for auto making in the US, but less well known is John DeLorean's roll in launching the American muscle car movement in the '60's. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! this week:

Before John DeLorean got into the stainless-steal-bodied-gull-winged-kinda-sports-car business, he was Pontiac's chief engineer and eventually became the division's head. Perhaps his greatest achievement while he was there was the creation of the GTO.

Can't reconcile the fact that the The Goat and the DeLorean were conceived of by the same person? Don't know what GTO means? Like epic shots of John DeLorean? Find more at the link.

There's a reason this song exists

Put the top down on your muscle car and ride

64 was a good year but I think 1970 would be a strong contender for the top spot. The reasoning is that 70 was the absolute peak of the muscle car wars. Every manufacturer had high horsepower machines, AMC had the AMX, Machine. Buicks had the 455 stage cars and the wild GSX. Chevy had LS6 454 chevelles, L78 Camaros. All the different 440/Hemi powered mopars. Pontiac had the GTO still, with a 455. Olds had the 442. Ford had the big Torinos and the 429 mustangs. Mercury had the cyclones and cougar eliminators. Really 1970 was a bigger year than 64 in terms if muscle cars. After 70 emissions and other things began to kill the original muscle cars

2019 is going to be a year ripe with retrospective blogging.

I don't disagree that there were some great cars made in 69, however, none of the cars you list were new models, the trajectory had been set for these cars years ago. Also, that 'Cuda you listed is a '70, not a '69.

'71 was indeed a dark year.

Yeah, and it has nothing to do with actual 1969. Bryan Adams was 9 years old.

New or not, they were the pinnacle of their line in nineteen sixty-nine

I agree. While many of these cars were not "new" they were when a lot of them peaked or were close to peaking. Big block power was in its heyday.

But the feeling of America in 1969 is personified through that song, which is the main point of it

Yeah we will always look back and possibly change what year we think was the best. 1969 is far enough back though that it will be hard to beat, for me at least.

And it doesn't matter if they were new models. Most of these were the best versions of their models. This was pretty much the height of the muscle car wars. And that Cuda was introduced in 1969, close enough ;) Here's a 69 Formula S instead

That was my exact point :D Not many people like the '67 camaro, but how many people don't like the '69?

not really it was just the beginning of the end. In 71 you still had hemi cudas and challengers, the GM camp was still ok 442, GNX, SS454s. They hp numbers dropped though and compression ratios were beginning to tank but it wasn't the high and wild times like in 69/70

Plenty of people like the '67 Camaro, with many of them liking it more than '68s and '69s. But '69 was the peak year for performance and it's the most preferred by the majority.
